Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). This position is located on the University of Nevada, Reno main campus and reports directly to the Associate Vice President, Research Administration.

The Director directs programs to assure a safe and healthy campus environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors as well as the surrounding community. The Director proactively accesses and implements the new programs and policies, while successfully collaborating with other administrative and academic units across the campus. The Director is responsible for campus lab safety, hazardous waste management, radiation, occupational health and safety. Manages and implements education, training and outreach programs to provide faculty, staff, and students opportunities to become informed and understand their respective laboratory and environmental safety roles. Designs emergency safety protocols and participates in the tabletop emergency exercises. This individual ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations that govern EH&S related activities and acts as a public spokesperson for the University regarding environmental health and safety. Develops and maintains applicable reports and metrics related to EH&S programs. Also, the Director provides leadership of IT program development internally or purchasing externally which contain regulatory information.

The Director promotes diversity and inclusion, positive employee relations, and teamwork, as well as fair and equitable treatment of their employees. This position oversees and manages all of the EH&S human, financial and physical resources; creates and ensures an organizational culture that values transparent, timely and collaborative communication. The Director also maintains and promotes a strong safety culture and follows all safety policies, procedures and regulations; identifies and communicates workplace hazards and corrects or seeks assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.

Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree and 5 years of related management experience; OR

Doctorate Degree and 3 years of related management experience.

Related experience: Management experience in a multi-component, complex, environmental health and safety program at an academic, government, or industrial institution with scientific and technical research programs.

Certification and Licensure

A successful candidate will have at least one nationally recognized certification in an environmental health and safety discipline such as Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Health Physicist or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
