Required Qualification: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent). Three (3) years of research experience in Public Health, Epidemiology, Computational Medical Research, or Gerontology, including at least one year of research experience following attainment of a Doctoral degree or foreign equivalent. A background in the use of quantitative methods.

Preferred Qualification:
Experience in public health research. Experience with gerontology or with Alzheimer's and related dementias. A history of successful grant application, preparation, and submission. Experience with data cleaning and management using Stata, R, SAS, etc. Strong writing and presenting skills, as evidenced by publications in academic journals. Experience supervising and managing research staff.

Primary Purpose:
During the World Trade Center (WTC) attacks, responders who helped in search, rescue, and recovery endured multiple traumatic and toxic exposures. At Stony Brook, our work has increasingly shown that experiences and toxic exposures endured by responders while working at the WTC sites have an important impact on the brain. We are now seeking to hire a Research Scientist who is excited in profiling the effects of toxic exposures, response activities, and brain reserve or resilience on the cognitive and neurological health of WTC responders.

The incumbent will gain access to more than 20 years of longitudinal data for a cohort of >12,000 and will also be able to access previously collected and new data on physical and cognitive functioning and blood-based biomarkers examining Alzheimer's and related diseases (grants: CDC/U01 OH012258; NIH/NIA R01 AG049953), and/or from structural, functional, and molecular neuroimaging studies (grants: NIH/NIA R01 AG067590). The incumbent will develop, design, and conduct research experiments. They will oversee ensuring that all research protocols follow applicable policies and procedures. The Research Scientist will also be responsible for some operations of the lab as necessary.

● Develop and design research experiments in the field of disaster epidemiology.

● Conduct research experiments utilizing specialized techniques, applying theories, concepts, and principles in the field of, and the sociology and politics of health.

● Responsible for the overall management of the lab, and may supervise research assistant, graduate student, and postdoctoral associate and research support positions. Will provide training on specific specialized skills and research methods and is responsible for the operation of the lab.

● Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

● Apply for grants, including writing proposals for research projects, identifying funding sources, and training opportunities.

● Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) to be offered for this position is noted below, it represents SBU's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.



Salary: $60,000-$80,000
